As the trail winds its way up the steep talus slopes of the valley it becomes a narrow ledge formed from the rocks themselves. The rocky debris of the slopes, ranging in size from gravel up to truck-sized boulders, was left behind as the large glaciers began to melt away around 15,000 years ago.
