The only drawback to trying to follow a trail in the snow through thick forests is that once in awhile you lose track of the main path. Then you end up breaking trail through the woods and trying to guess which direction you need to angle towards to hit the main course again.

The upside to this is that as you wander through the area off the beaten path you sometimes run across a scene that most people miss.

This was the situation I was in when I came across this small meadow filled with short willow trees.
