This is a photo taken during one of those rest stops after a steep section of trail. The forest around me was quite green and lush. This is only a temporary situation, however. By mid-June the spring moisture is gone and the woods begin to take on their usual drier look. In fact, heavier spring rains can actually make the summer fire danger even worse by promoting a denser undergrowth. Once this undergrowth dries in the heat of summer it provides even more potential fuel to forest fires. Of course less rain than usual can cause the forests to dry out too quickly and become tinderboxes by May. So if it rains you can get forest fires, and if it does not rain you can get forest fires. Nice situation, eh?
